The Big Idea: Food Waste in America (What can we, the students, do to prevent our own food waste?)
Connection to Big Idea: The students started this topic by analyzing their own food waste consumption with their school lunches. We then expanded the topic to look at food waste in America. Now, the students are going back to what they can do to within their own environment to prevent food waste within their school and/or at home.
Product: The students have a choice to either create a poster or design a pamphlet. The poster will be displayed in the lunchroom cafeteria showing/suggesting ways in which a students can limit food waste during lunchtime. The pamphlet will focused on ways in which the student can reduce food waste at home. The students will be incorporating academic and language vocabulary through their writing and

The intention and purpose of creating posters and pamphlets is that the students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the importance of not wasting food in their school and at home and show ways in which they can be a part of the solution and not the problem.
This is extremely motivating for the students because it is a concept that they experience every day and they can make a choice to do something differently about food waste. They can become the spokespeople for this problem and influence their peers, parents, and community for positive change.
Description of Research
The students will need to research ways in which they can reduce food waste in the school and at home. The students also need to research ways in which they can use the leftover food in order for it not going into the garbage then into landfills.
They then need to create a poster/pamphlet explaining why it is important to care about food waste. They also need to show what the steps are in order to prevent food waste and the steps of how to use the leftover
