Football positions can be classified into three categories: offense, defense and special teams. These three categories make up the game of football but yet football has a major influence on many Americans. Many Americans spend thousands of dollars to attend games, watch it on TV or purchase merchandise of their favorite teams. This essay is going to explain the three categories that make up football and what makes this game so intriguing.
The first category is offense. Offense is referred to the unit that “Sells tickets for games”. Offense is the unit that is trying to score points for their team. Defense is referred to the unit that “Wins Championships”. Defense is the unit that is trying to keep opposing offenses from scoring. There are multiple ways defenses can line up to keep opposing teams from score. There are three levels on defense: Defensive line, linebackers, and defensive backs. These three levels do different things but work as one unit to keep other teams from scoring points. A 3-4, 4-3, 4-2-5 and 3-3 Stack are just a few schemes that defenses can use to try to stop other teams from scoring. The first number is how many defensive linemen are up front, the second number is how many linebackers are behind the defensive linemen and the third number if there is one refers to how many defensive backs there are on the field. Special teams are the most often over looked unit that makes up the game of football. Offense and defense are the flashy units where the super stars play. Special teams are vital to the game of football but fans mostly over look special teams. There are various areas of special teams such as kickoff, kickoff return, punt, punt return, and field goal teams. Each one of these units have specific things to do in order to help either the offense of defense of their own team. Kickoff happens at the beginning of every game and the start of the third quarter. Whichever team receives the ball first at the beginning of the game will in return have to kick the ball to the opposing team at the start of the second half. The kickoff and punt teams have the same objective, which is to assist in keeping the opposing team sway from their in-zone. By doing so this benefits the defense of their team. Another unit that plays a crucial part of the game is the kickoff return team. This is the exact opposite of kickoff. This team is receiving the ball being kicked off to them by the opposing team. Kickoff return and punt teams want to run the ball all the way back for a touchdown or give their team the best field position to score on offense. The last but yet important group of special teams is the field goals unit. When an offense team has not made it into a close enough distance to the goal line to make a touchdown they have the opportunity to kick a field
