Footloose: Dance Should Be Allowed In Church

In many religions around the world, dancing is a forbidden art. In the not too distant past, there were even whole towns here in the US where the practice had been outlawed. One of these holdouts inspired the 1984 hit movie Footloose, which was remade in 2011. Today, it might be hard to find a town that outlawed movement lead by the spirit of freedom or joy or celebration, but it’s easy to find a church that does. There are many instances in the Bible where individuals celebrated by dancing. It was usually used as a way to worship or praise God. We should do what the man after God’s own heart loved to do: Leap and dance before the Lord with all of our might. Dancing should be allowed, even encouraged, in church.

Dance needs to be incorporated in worship service so we can express ourselves more effectively. Most worship services incorporate some type of music. It is difficult to imagine music without singing, and singing without dancing. But there are more ways to worship than just singing and listening.
