In the poem “For That He Looked Not Upon Her” by George Gascoigne, Gascoigne uses the couplet at the end of the poem, duction of select words, and imagery to articulate the complex attitude of the speaker. The imagery in lines 2-4 develops and analyzes the complex attitude of the speaker by showing his “louring” self and about how he is depressed. This can be seen in line 2 where he was to “hold my louring head so low”. In line 3, the author furthers his gloominess by saying that he takes “no delight to range”, making it seem that it is a chore to look at her. However, line 4 gives off a more positive connotation of her talking “about the gleans which on your face do grow”, essentially complimenting her beauty. The couplet at the end of the poem (lines 13-14) serves as a separation between the rest of the stanza. This is shown through their own separate rhyme scheme, as well as it being indented from the rest of the poem. This is developing the attitude of the author by providing a complex situation between sadness and love. The speaker talks about a “wink” per say in a relationship, but then immediately goes into her “blazing eyes”. Two metaphors are also mentioned in lines 5 and 10. This is metaphorically comparing himself to the mouse breaking out of her trap, and also compares her to fire. This further develops the argument between them and his attitude towards
