Forbidden Love Quotes

The first line of Pride and Prejudice reads, “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife” (Austen 1). Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth’s mother from Pride and Prejudice, strongly believes in this statement. This is a significant quote because of how well it captures the main theme in both Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights. It encapsulates the chain of forbidden love in both novels. Both novels depict societies where reputation and class play a huge role in major decisions, such as finding a lifelong partner. In Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice, two of five daughters are in search of love living in a society that looks down upon marrying someone of a lower class.
