Why don’t the good men get the girl? Pride and Prejudice is a fictitious novel written by Jane Austen, written in 1813 during the regency era. The novel depicts a family in a small village that marries 2 daughters to rich men and one to a scoundrel and has some pride, prejudice and gossip mixed in. There has been a lot of change in the last 2 centuries and 5 years since the book was published. Back then novels showing women who wanted a gentleman that would look after them, where the bad boy would hide his horrible side to try and get the girl.

They must be friends before they can be loved ones. This quotes relates to Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare because the love in this play happens leads to marriage too fast for them to be truly in love. If this play were to continue after the fifth act, their marriages would most likely be unhappy.
In the case of the Bennet daughter’s, their father had a small yearly income, therefore, being less favorable to marry to a higher social class. The first paragraph in the novel, “Pride and Prejudice” it is states that (a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.) (3). Women of this period, didn’t have fortune, nor could they possess property, therefore, becoming someone’s wife would assure them a future.

Due to this conception, challenges arose regarding relationships, posing individual adversities for both women and men. In Pride and Prejudice, the quote “A single man of large fortune: four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!” emphasises the lack of independency for women through the exclamation and overjoyed tone. It was expected that men were to be the breadwinners of the household, which restricted women as they could not attempt to obtain a job and were confined within domesticity. In addition, this quote is also able to portray societal expectations and reputations of men, as they were regarded as pawns in elevation of status and financial security, rather than human beings.
Pride and Prejudice allows us to see how families behaved and what types of problems they have faced during their time period. If we compare these types of families to modern-day examples, we will easily be able to see the differences and how far our societies have come. For example, today, our families do not put as much pressure onto their children about marriage. They especially do not exclude them if they have chosen poorly. Many families during Jane Austen’s time, specifically the gentry, were very strict on how to do certain things and go about their lives.
