In America’s consumerist society, businesses encourage individuals to purchase their products through the use of creative advertisements that appeal to their internal urges. Each advertisement uses a combination of different appeals to convey a message that resonates with the consumer. Businesses design their messages based on the target audience; those they are appealing to, making each message communicated differently. This is exemplified by the differences between the Chevrolet Suburban ad and the Ford Expedition ad. When one looks at the Ford ad, they see a couple driving and through the window they can see a winding landscape that is dotted with trees and a clear blue sky. The ad implies that if one drives a Ford Expedition, then one’s longing for escape will be fulfilled. Furthermore, the words “Cloud Ten” are also shown on the ad. This adds a different dimension to the need to escape because Ford is telling the consumer that through driving through the clouds, one would be in a state of bliss. The ambiguity of the ad is due to a variety of factors. First, no driver is shown in the car, leaving it open to interpretation to who is driving the car. Additionally, as Alyssa and Lorenza pointed out, the desert like environment that the Chevrolet is in the ad makes it even harder to tell who the car is for. Typically, SUVs are targeted towards families, such as the Ford Expedition is, but by the car being in a desert like environment, with no signs of a family, it implies that that the car is aimed to the more adventurous type. Really, the only target audience that the car seems to be going after are those who want a car towards the bigger side. However, that does not do much to narrow down the target audience that Chevrolet Suburban is going
