More than a half-century after its debut, the Ford Mustang is the best-selling sports car in the world, now that it is sold in approximately 150 countries. In the US, the Mustang offers a standard turbo four-cylinder engine and a V8. But is also sold as the Shelby GT350/350R, a top-end model with an unusual engine unique to this model with an attendant and raucous exhaust system. Who was Carroll Shelby? The top-end Mustang is named for Carroll Shelby, a one-time race car driver turned automotive designer. He is best known for taking existing models and modifying them with manufacturer input. Shelby’s relationship with Ford began in the 1960s, but the two parted ways for many years before renewing their relationship in 2003. In the intervening years, Shelby partnered with Dodge, putting his stamp on such models as the Omni, Daytona and Viper.
