Ella Aerts Period 5 Your Inner Fish Discussion Answers Chapter 1 - Finding Your Inner Fish Neil and his colleagues focused on rocks from 375 million years ago because fossils from 360 million years ago were amphibians with necks and four legs. However rocks that are 380 million years old looked more like fish we know today, with fins and scale. So, it made sense that they would find the transitioning fossils in rocks that was 375 million years old.
The fossil finding process is long and hard, it can take years before something life changing is discovered. Neil Shubin knows all about this as it took him and his team years of searching to find one of the most important fossils that tell about evolution, the Tiktaalik. Early on in the book Neil asks us “How can we visualize events that happened millions
The book title the sixth Extinction Written by Elizabeth Kolbert is based on The extinction of species. Author Kolbert discusses personal research and scientific studies of certain species that have become extinct are becoming extinct. One species Kolbert discusses in her research studies is the Panama Golden A discovery of a fugues that has brought extinction of the golden frog from wild and has speared throughout different counties including the United States. Kolbert travels to Panama to document first-hand what she discovers through scientific research of the mass Extinction of the one of the longest living Amphibians.
Shubin was convinced that the Arctic Circle had the best chance for the discovery of this creature. He performed extensive research regarding the antiquity of the rocks, and the Arctic Circle had the oldest rocks than any place he had ever been to. He always found fossils and added to the evidence of the species, but he wanted the creature itself- fossil evidence of the actual animal itself. At first, to Shubin’s dismay he couldn’t find evidence of the fossil, and when he was packing up his gear to leave, something incredible happened. A grad student who was part of Shubin’s crew found a tremendous number of fossils.
We walked along the beach a little more and talked and looked at the location of a whale skull that used to be buried in the sand. The rock was actually much smoother than . We also took a look at some possible bones and skeletal remains along with concretions. The concretions were rather large comparable to smart car in size. Concretions are solid masses formed around some type of matter that will change the chemistry of the rock slightly, helping it become harder and less susceptible to erosion.
By January 1995, it was clearly visible that they had found a partial skeleton. A downside to this discovery was the skeleton’s poor condition, some parts of the skeleton had been crushed and scattered into many fragments. When the bones where touched, they would crumble. The researchers decided to finish excavating the fossils in the National Museum of Ethiopia in Addis Ababa and virtual reconstructions of the crushed skull and pelvis were made in Tokyo and Ohio. Some fossils that were taken to Tokyo, were scanned with a custom micro–computed tomography scanner that help show what was inside the bones and teeth (Gibbons 38).
In his acclaimed novel, “The Book that Changed America: How Darwin’s Theory of Evolution Ignited a Nation,” Randall Fuller explores the groundbreaking work of esteemed natural biologist Charles Darwin and his 1859 work, “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.” He documents the work’s travels throughout America and its circulation among New England’s intellectual elite, focusing on the explosive reactions to its previously unimaginable claims; theologians, scientists, Transcendentalist philosophers, abolitionists, and pro-slavery apologists alike all had something to say about this new theory. Fuller’s brilliant interpretation of this cultural upheaval, using personal writings from the desks of intellectual giants, cements Darwin’s
There is a common misconception about the field of paleontology. Many people believe it’s boring, that it’s irrelevant, and that it’s even a waste of time. However, as award winning paleontologist and author Neil Shubin argues in his novel, Your Inner Fish, the field of paleontology has the potential to change the way we view our bodies. Shubin rose to fame in the mid ‘00s after discovering a brand new fossil on the coast of Ellesmere Island. This fossil was of a creature that was part land animal and part fish, containing the flat head and joints of a land animal and the fins and webbing of a fish.
The Merriam Webster defines the term monster as “a person of unnatural or extreme ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty.” This definition could remind the readers of the screen play of Monster written by Walter Dean Myers. The story revolves around death, gangs, prison, fear and guilt. Monster is the story of a 16-year-old boy named Steve Harmon from Harlem who is on trial for possible accessory to murder. Harmon is on trial for a being a possible accomplice to a murder.
The Value of Memory and Recorded History In the novel, The Farming of Bones, Edwidge Danticat delves into the power of memory by following a young, resilient girl who coped with the loss of her loved ones and grief. The story takes place in the Dominican Republic during the 1930-40’s. During that time, Rafael Trujillo, a wicked dictator, ordered Dominican soldiers to kill Haitians along the border of the Dominican Republic and Haiti; Widely known as the “Parsley Massacre.” Danticat further explores the power of memory through the life events of Amabelle Desir, a young Haitian girl, who was orphaned at the age of eight.
When reading in chapter 9 about “Geology and Primate Origins”, I came to a decision to choose the relative dating techniques. It is dating techniques that establish the age of a fossil only in comparison to other materials found above and below it. Relative dating techniques use the principles of stratigraphy to tell us how old something is in relation to something else without applying an actual chronological age. An example of this technique is biostratigraphy (faunal correlation), biostratigraphy is a relative dating technique using the comparison of fossils from different stratigraphic sequences to estimate which layers are older and which are younger; employed in the Early Pleistocene deposits at Olduvai and other African sites. The prime
Therefore, the fossils were either laid down over billions of years or in the last 4,000 years. 4. The fossils couldn’t have been laid down in the last 4,000 years. 5.
There are many movies with scientific inaccuracies, but the movie Jurassic Park stood out the most. Jurassic Park has many different kind of inaccuracies and some are just small and some are major. The scientific inaccuracies I picked out to explain are the Velociraptor Inaccuracies, Tyrannosaurus Rex Inaccuracies, Dilophosaurus Inaccuracies, Brachiosaur Inaccuracies, Fossil Excavation Inaccuracies, and the Dino- DNA Inaccuracies. Sometimes it can be hard to find scientific inaccuracies and then sometimes I could be difficult. Just depends on how well you pay attention to the movie and how well you know about the objects in the movie.
The rock layers in the Grand canyon really show how an awesome God he is. The Fossils located in the Grand Canyon mostly came from the water killing the animal and preserving it( Ribokas 3). There are also many types of fossils in the Grand Canyon. Most of the fossils came from the world wide flood, also known as Noah's Flood. The definition of a fossil "Is remains of an organism preserved in a petrified form or as a mold or cast in the rock."
