“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a short story. The story first appeared in the New Yorker in 1948. This story sometimes is classified as a horror story, and is loved and hated by many. In this story it tells us about a small town that holds a lottery each year. One person is picked by this lottery and is then stoned to death. This event has been held for seventy years and is a great deal to the town people. Due to the story holding back on the revelation of what is happening for so long, it is crucial that we us foreshadowing. This allows the reader to feel the cohesion for this story.
