Foresight and Fear What is fear? Fear is a feeling, and like all feelings it has the ability to impact everyone, including me, when making life-altering choices. While fear itself is a powerful force, it is when your foresight starts to cause this fear that its power is really shown. The picture obtained by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum shows a sight feared by millions during WWII, that became a reality for many including Elie Weisel, the author of the best selling book Night. Elie was deeply affected by fear leading him to have “more faith in Hitler than in anyone else”. Even though I haven’t experienced anything close to as devastating as this, I can still relate to what people like Elie experienced in my everyday life. He is constantly trying to decide between basing his decisions on one or the other. It is his logical decisions based on what he thinks might happen that are able to keep him alive by being prepared for challenges he might encounter later on. While foresight is what keeps him alive, it is fear that keeps him motivated, he knows how he doesn’t want to end up, and does what he can to fight his fear of death by facing his smaller fears like the fear of his father dying. This idea of facing fear because of foresight towards the future is very relatable to me and many others in different situations with one of the biggest that I can think of being money, education and careers. Foresight is a skill I use everyday to help me prepare for unexpected events by saving money and to practice skills that I think might be useful for me in my future. Not using Foresight also isn’t used by everyone and is what causes fear for many in modern day society and long ago for Elie’s family when they could have left their home and never had to experience anything they did, but instead chose to stay out of the fear of
