What is love? There are many ways American Literature has portrayed the idea of love, and how it works. Several pieces of American Literature demonstrate the theme of love; this is shown in Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, “Annabelle Lee”, by Edgar Allan Poe, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag and Mildred Montag, a married couple, represent what love is not about.
Every day, we hear the term ‘love’ in several different situations. So, what is love? According to Shakespeare, in sonnet 116 - The first quatrain describes love as an unchangeable force in the lines “Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds, / Or bends with the remover to remove: / O no! it is an ever-fixed mark.” Shakespeare enforces the fact that true love always perseveres, no matter what it’s up against by using the metaphor, “That looks on tempests and is never shaken” in the second quatrain.
What is likely to happen? Someone or something will be chased or in danger. Why do you make this prediction?
As a conceptual object, there is no real physical form for love. You can’t touch or sense love directly, but you may feel it through an indicator or cognition. Before we have an acute definition for love, intelligent philosophers, thinker, and writers have separate explanations on love itself based on different situations. Socrates, one of the significant philosophers who emphasizes rationalism, uses deductive reasoning to explain that the telos of love is one’s desire. The purpose of loving is to produce good or beauty, the ideal objects that highly promote one’s morality.
In fahrenheit 451, Mildred wants to kill herself because she is very unhappy. Some might argue that she is just sick, but that isn’t all because she depicts signs that she is depressed, lonely, and lacks the feeling of love. This could all be causes of society having a negative effect on Mildred and her wellbeing; technology, obsession, and being unable to cope with her emotion are all factors that play into Mildred life. Fahrenheit 451 burns through the thoughts of readers as controversy spills out of the pages. Guy Montag, firefighter, husband, and a truth seeker, goes through multiple barriers trying to figure out the questions no one dares to ask.
In To Kill A Mockingbird, the love in the story is not romantic, but rather more about the bonds between family and friends. This includes the love for the family, loving friends, and loving a community or culture. The love for friends is in Dill’s actions to run away to the Finch house. The most noticeable type of love in the book is family love. Atticus loves his children dearly and they love him in return.
Love affects us all in different ways, and throughout the film “harold and Maude” we the audience get to this in Harold. The friendship and romance between HArold and Maude affects and changes the character of Harold. In the beginning of the film Harold’s character is very dark and depressing. The outfits that Harold would wear was mostly only dark clothing.

“Yossarian was in love with the maid in the lime-colored panties because she seemed to be the only woman left he could make love to without falling in love with” (). Throughout Joseph Heller’s novel, Catch-22, sex is illustrated as an escape from the bureaucratic and cold war which the characters are stuck within. Though Yossarian manages to become close to many of the females which he spends his time with, Yossarian treats love as a desirable escape which is detrimental. As an effect, though Yossarian seeks out love throughout the novel, he either falls completely away from love or manages to come just short of it. This is seen multiple times throughout the novel with a few critical examples being Yossarian’s relationships with the maid, Nurse Duckett, and Luciana.
Frank Tebbets once said, “A life without love in it is like a heap of ashes upon a deserted hearth, with the fire dead, the laughter stilled and the light extinguished.” Love is essential for human beings to live a fulfilled and happy life. Love or the
One of the best feelings in the world is love. Love is a universal quality that anyone can understand no matter who they are and where they live. However, even with it being such a common emotion, it is a powerful idea which can be difficult to define. Yet, the author Harper Lee, has beautifully portrayed the simplistic idea of unconditional love, or agape, through her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee is not referring to love as romance, but as strong love among family, friends, neighbors, and even enemies.
A smile, one of the rare human notions deciphered across every language barrier in the world. Another, watching two people walk down the street holding hands, whether a mother protectively helping her child walk across the street, or a couple on a date out on the town. Both scenarios indicate a sign of love. Throughout Hosseini's novel, The Kite Runner, love runs throughout the plot. However, it does not matter if it is brotherly, platonic love or a romantic relationship between a man and his wife, Hosseini's view of love seems to come with a price.
The Perfect Love ¨The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for¨ (Joseph Addison). If you control every aspect of your life, if you plan everything to happen, you will have none of the amazing surprises to hope for that life has in store, like somebody you might meet, somewhere you might go, and love you might find. There 's that word again, Love. What is it? What makes us fall in love, or even out of love?

While in another piece of American literature ‘The Crucible’ by Arthur Miller, the readers are shown a self-sacrifice for love when character John Proctor confesses to save his Wife, Elizabeth.
