Vanny Angel once said " be careful who you trust and tell your problems to. Not everyone who smiles at you is your friend. " In Egar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" Fortunato is always playing tricks on Montresor. Montresor was sick of being tricked and he tried to trick Fortunato and he fell for the trick and followed Montresor to the catacombs. When they got to the catacombs Montresor put Fortunato behind a wall and closed it and no one knows that he was down there so he will stay there until he dies. The fact that Fortunato is a fool, gullible, and always drunk, makes him an easy target for Montresor to kill him. First, do to the fact that Fortunato is always drunk, he does not realize that he is a fool, which makes it easy for Montresor to kill him. The fact that Fortunato is drunk, reveals to the reader that he has a drinking problem. He went to a carnival with Montresor and they were drinking at the carnival. " ' He had been drinking much.' " ( p. 1, l. 40-41) An analysis of Fortunato's actions show that he is drunk a lot. It also shows that he has a drinking problem. The fact that Fortunato is gullible, reveals to the reader that he is tricked into a lot of things. Montresor is taking him to the catacombs and telling him a little about the catacombs. Fortunato did not want to go with him but he tells him, he wants to show him something. Fortunato believed it and want to the catacombs.
