Ron White once said "I believe that life gives people lemons, they should make lemonade... and try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have a party." In Edgar Allen Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," Fortunato was drunk and insulted Montressor. Fortunato being intoxicated lead him to believe and fall for things easier. Montressor had buried Fortunato alive and Fortunato thought it was all a joke. Fortunato makes himself an easy target because he is too gullible, he is impatient, and he is easily manipulated. First, Fortunato is too trusting, he does not realize that Montressor is trying to set him up. Due to the fact the Fortunato is never sober, we can see that he goes anywhere anyone tells him to. He lets Montressor take him by the arm and takes him to find the amontillado. " 'He raised it to his lips with a leer. He paused and nodded to me familiarly, while his bells jingled. I drink, he said, to the buried that repose around us. And I to your long life. He again took my arm, and we proceeded' " (p. 2, l. 56-62). We can see that Fortunato is a little happy to see Montressor, he barely knows the guy but is too drunk to realize it. He has a smile on his face like he is having a good time. "It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my to smile now was at the thought of his immolation" (p. 1, l. 16-20). Also, the fact Fortunato is amazed to see Montressor, reveals that he is looking to get set up. Montressor saw the perfect opportunity to get his revenge.
