The Benefits of a Four-Day School Week

There are a lot of pros and cons to having a four-day school week. Most people are people are between on whether the district should have a four-day week. There are only five states in the U.S. with 25% of schools that have a four-day school week. There are nine states with more than 2%, but less than 20% of schools with a four-day week. Ten states only have 2% of schools with a four-day week. There are a lot of benefits to having a four-day school week. However, there are also a lot of disadvantages as well. For example, a study done shows that having a four-day week increases a student’s attendance throughout the week. This will help a student learn more. This will also help them to better understand what they are doing in class since they have not missed school. From personal experience coming back to school after missing one or more days is very confusing and stressful. It is very hard to learn and understand all the work missed school their grades would be better because they would not have missing assignments. This would also make it a lot easier on teachers because they would not have to go back and grade missing work. Most peoples’ concern about having a four-day week is that test scores would decrease. There are sixty-two school districts in Colorado that have a four-day school week. A study was conducted in Colorado to see the difference in kids test scores who go to school for four days a week and a kid who goes to school for five days a week. The school district should give teachers and students a four-day school week as a break. Both teachers and students can quickly get burnt out on going to school and would benefit from getting a break once a week. Most districts hold up on having a four-day week is that there will be a possible drop in test scores, but test scores do not mean as much as people think they do. People should look beyond a child’s test scores. People should also focus more on a child’s mental health than their test scores.
