In the book The Glass Castle Jeannette Walls, the narrator displays her parent's parenting skills as authoritative. According to Cherry, Kendra. “Psychology: What They Are and Why They Matter.” The Four Styles of Parenting. she defines authoritative parents as being “... more nurturing and forgiving rather than punishment”.

In The Glass Castle, Rex and Rosemary Walls can be categorized as permissive parents. Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is permissive because they approach their children as more of a friend than a parental figure, they do not discipline their kids, and they have few demands expected from their kids. The Walls parents act more of a friend than a parent to their kids due to their easygoing nature. Rex brushes off Jeanette's complaint regarding Robbie’s inappropriate touching and does not take action as a normal parent should. Rex had the opportunity to punish Robbie for his behavior but decided not to: “I’m sure he just pawed you some, I knew you could handle yourself” (Walls 213).
The parenting paradigm style most exemplified by the Walls family in The Glass Castle a memoir by Jeannette Walls is permissive. Permissive parents are often justified as merely disciplining their children (Cherry, “The Four Styles of Parenting”). Jeannette states that “Dad squatted in front of us” and asked, “so what happened here” to his children who got into an altercation with one of the neighborhood kids (89). Rex Walls demonstrates his inability to rightfully discipline his children for a crime that they committed, by simply just brushing it off and agreeing to skedaddle, or run away from the incident, once again. Permissive parents are also described as being more responsive than they are demanding (Cherry).
In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the Walls family is considered homeless and they are constantly moving from place to place. They constantly find themselves either with a somewhat decent amount of money or at times, no money at all. Jeannette, being one of four children always follows along with and listens to her parents and eventually notices that their family does things very differently than most other families. As Jeannette explains her childhood and how she is being raised by her parents, it is clear to see how different Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is compared to the parenting style of other parents. Since their parenting style is so different, it seems that it affects their children in a negative way throughout their childhood, but in the end it makes Jeannette become a better and more successful person.
Throughout the movie, Parenthood, the three main parenting styles were displayed throughout as, the dictator, permissive, and democratic. The dictator form of parenting, also known as the authoritarian parent sets strict rules and guidelines and will not changing them or give any leeway. Children that have authoritarian parents usually have low self-esteem and trouble to do things on their own when they get older. Then there is the permissive parent, who rather than setting rules and guidelines, opts out of this, their discipline is not seen and if they do set rules, they don 't punish when the rules are broken. There is also a balance of good parenting seen in the democratic form.

Ceballo analyzed immigrant and U.S born parents using authoritarian parenting style to encourage academic success. She emphasized on the impact of parent’s commitment, facilitation of their child’s autonomy, non-verbal expression and access to supportive faculty, to academic success of a Latino student. Ceballos interviews U.S born Latinos/as who were from low-income families and who attending Yale University as the first in their family to get a college degree. Throughout these interviews she discovered that working-class parents viewed education as the primary source for social and economical mobility. Therefore they could not directly help with academic work but were more lenient on their parenting as long style as it benefited their education.
In this type of parenting style, parents tend to focus more on the caring and kind side in which they tend to lack in setting boundaries and rules for their children. Parents that are permissive tend to have a friend or buddy like relationship with their child. The setback for this type of relationship would be that child would run over their parents and possible become out of control. An example of this would be, a parent who had finish cooking dinner and called their child out to eat only for the child to through a fit and request for the parent to make something or they won’t eat. The parent would response to this event by apologizing to the child and make something else that they like or want.
With this in mind, a complex discussion of each theory can give one keen insight into the development of the young Harry Potter. Firstly, Diane Baumrind 's theory of the different types of parenting styles is an interesting discussion to have because of Harry 's upbringing with his aunt and uncle. Diane identified four different types of parenting styles in her work: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved.
