This essay will be discussing what the four pillars of sustainability are and how these developments of the four pillars affect housing. The four pillars of sustainability that this essay will be discussing are social sustainability, economical sustainability, environmental sustainability and cultural sustainability and how these four pillars affect housing in general.
Social Sustainability
Social sustainability consists of human rights, labor rights and corporate governance (Partridge. E., 2005). Culture is an important aspect of sustainable development, as it refers to how we understand and appreciate natural resources and each other, however, the role and meaning of culture within the framework of sustainable development is relatively vague both in science and policy (Hawkes. J., 2005). Sometimes culture has been treated as a component of social sustainability, sometimes as a fourth pillar or even as a key dimension of sustainable development (Duxbury. N. et al., 2007). Even social housing that the government provides can be a part of social sustainability as those promote people communicating on a regular basis as the units are within a building. Economic sustainability affects housing more on the grass root levels as the government and private companies that build units more specifically RDP housing have to make sure they use materials that are cost effective and don’t affect the environment. Also to provide housing units that is affordable if not RDP. Environmental sustainability affects housing as to what materials are used to build housing that are renewable and don’t affect the environment negatively and also affected by where certain sections are built, for example you wouldn’t want to build a township near an industrial sector of a city but more on open land than won’t affect its people as well. Cultural sustainability affects housing as to how they are built for example different townships are more or race divided as the apartheid government had a hand in this for example you would associate Kloof with whites, Umlazi with blacks, Wentworth with coloureds and Chatsworth with Indians. Cultural sustainability promotes building certain communities without having a clash of various cultures for example the Zulu
