After a series of wars with Great Britain and other European powers during the 18th century and early 19th century, France lost nearly all of its conquests and territories. In response to their own losses, France moved to resurrect a new empire after 1850, focused predominantly on acquiring and conquering Africa, Indochina, and the South Pacific.
