The Grimm brothers’ “The Sleeping Beauty” and Frances Minters The Sleepless Beauty follow the same basic plot: a beautiful baby is born, her parents celebrate their daughter’s birth with a huge celebration, but do not invite one witched witch. Furious that she was not invited to the celebration, the witch arrives to the party none the less, her irritation forcing her to cast a spell onto the new baby. The witch declares that when the baby becomes a teen she will prick her finger, forcing her and everyone near to fall into a deep sleep. The witches curse does happen, forcing the young girl and everyone around her to fall into a deep sleep; however, the teenage girl and all the sleeping prospects are awakened when they are both saved by their one true loves. The book places the reader in a city, comparable to modern day New York or Chicago. The witch is not invited to the party celebrating Little Beauty’s birth. Due to lack of invitation the wicked witch places a curse on Beauty; however, to prove she is not completely evil, the witch states that “when time is up, a great rock star will wake the Sleeping Beauty” from the curse (8). When Little Beauty turns fourteen, the witches curse becomes a reality; Beauty pricks her finger on an old-time vinyl record, forcing her and her parents to become very sleepy. Nonetheless, Beauty is able to find a loop hole in the witches curse; the next morning everyone awakes, because Beauty out smarted the witch, stating that “I … [just]…set the alarm” and was awakened “by the tuneful sound of rock […] by my favorite rock star, on my personal radio clock” (23). Elements such as a rock star, a vinyl record, and a radio clock force audience to imagine the story in a much more modern time
