Introduction
Recording history is important, as it most is likely the largest contributing factor towards advancing the human race. It is the logging of current events that allows humans to reflect, and therefore improve in all intellectual aspects. That current information is collected, synthesized, and distributed for global knowledge - for learning and education. This distribution encourages and enables individuals to progress specific aspects of their own lives, and possibly, many others’ as well. While advancement has always been a main focus, it can still be pleasurable to learn and understand what the past might have been like – to see where we have come from. Textbooks provide ample amounts of information on history, but it may be more suitable to examine a piece of artwork from that time period to obtain a better feel for it. This statement may be concluded factually true through the works of Donald Reynolds and Hugh Honour, who both claim that the use of color theme and nature was used to generate a sensation within the viewer. While Francesco Hayez put great effort into emphasizing the significance of nature within Aristotle, it may be considered as only half of the overall message. Hayez also created a bridge between the time period’s belief that nature was a key to enlightenment and a very prominent philosophical school of thought, empiricism. Empiricism is “the practice of basing ideas and theories on testing and experience” (Empiricism).
