“The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” was an astounding story that led to a good and bad outcome. Francis Macomber was a man who practically lost something that could change people’s perspectives of them, his title of courage. Throughout this story, we witness a transition that the main character of the story experiences. From being a weakling to becoming much more than that, Francis Macomber goes through different phases as he tries to find the inner man in him. Different main points will be mentioned from where he evolves through this story. Francis is described as a man who is very fit, which means he is in good shape for many manly activities. In the beginning of the story, the men at the camp saw him as a hero. During the story, it starts with them talking about a lion as they came back to camp. Without really explaining for some reason, they started thinking of Francis as a coward. Luckily later on, it reveals that Francis ran away during an attempt to kill a lion, which caused him to be perceived as scared and cowardice. The people in the campsite saw everything that had happened, including Mr. Wilson, and his wife, Margaret. Francis and his wife never had a good relationship to begin with, so as soon as she saw him, even though she has felt contemptuous of Francis for a while, it increased the dislike that she had for him. The jungle symbolizes a way of survival of the fittest, and even though Francis was described as “very tall, very well build”, Wilson proved himself mightier than Francis (Hemingway 2). With his heroic act, Margaret begin to have a secret affair with Wilson, due to the fact that Francis made a complete embarrassment of himself and lost the respect of his wife. The arguments between Francis and his wife shows how bad the relationship they ended up becoming due to his cowardice act. Though he is viewed as a coward, he uses that as a way to evolve into what he needs to prove himself again. He becomes encouraged to press on with the act that brings the change inside him. His wife knew as he becomes more confident, he wouldn’t need her troubles anymore, so of course, she kills her husband.
