Frank Lloyd Wright’s Modern style of Architecture responded to the Great Depression with a revolutionary style, and brought fluid quality to human invention. His modern style was different from others due to his low pitched roofs, central chimney, and main stairwell. This would soon become known as the Prairie style of architecture. With this knew style, Wright became known around the world as a modernist because he was one of the first to change the way people looked at architecture. This Building was constructed from 1909-1910 on the campus of the University of Chicago. The term Prairie style was not actually coined by Wright. Architectural critics noticed how the building fit in with its surroundings and how it resembled the plant life on the Midwest prairies of the United States. Along with the outside look of the house Wright also constructed the interior. He intended for the house and the furniture to be inseparable. Prairie style homes are different from other houses due to their strong exterior horizontal lines, low-pitched roofs, long bands of windows, and natural materials. In particular, the structures incorporate brick and wood into their design. One of the most well-known features of these homes is their use of art glass windows, which blend interior and exterior spaces. With this home, Wright began to explore aspects of modern architecture which would define his style. This was where he first made his mark as an experienced modern architect. He used his home mostly to experiment with different design ideas. The style that came from this was called “Prairie Style”. Which differs greatly from the mainstream “Victorian style”. They share formal elements such as a main stair well and a large front porch, but those aspects constructed very differently. Shortly after the construction of his new house. He launched his own firm in 1839. Wright was now able to expand his new-found Prairie Style of architecture to other homes. The first to join were many young architects who were looking to develop their own original style of architecture. Wright’s house and studio caused for many other architects to change their ways. People were drawn towards the new unconventional Prairie style of architecture. Having his firm and family grow rapidly called for an expansion of the house. Wright designed and helped to expand his house on three different occasions to account for his six children and rapidly growing business.
