The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary today, is a California state park, visited and toured by an estimated 1.3 million people annually. That number of visitors continues to grow, and one of the many driving reasons that peaks peoples’ interests in this once maximum security prison, is the infamous and unresolved escape of inmates, Clarence Anglin, John Anglin and Frank Morris on June 11th, 1962. Clarence and John Anglin were brothers from a big family of seven brothers and seven sisters. Both were charged for bank robbery, and when in prison, attempted to escape from the Alabama Penitentiary, which is what initially got them into Alcatraz. Abandoned by his parents at a young age, Frank Morris was an orphan, spending most his life in foster care, starting a life of crime at the ripe age of thirteen. He was charged with breaking and entering, narcotics and drug possession, burglary, and armed robbery. Frank Morris befriended the brothers, along with Allen West, a car thief, who was in on their plan but failed to execute it with them, at the Atlanta Penitentiary prior to them being reunited at Alcatraz. With scraps of wood, Allen West made the group paddles. Because Allen hadn’t worked in the corridor like the others, his grill’s hole was not complete, which resulted in his failure to accompany them in the escape, although he did make it onto the roof, the others were long gone and had left him behind, he chose to go back to his cell.
