Humans naturally seek relations with other humans as they evolved in primitive times to live in small groups to survive. Removing the social aspect of life could cause detrimental effects and ruin their lives. While stranded on an island, food, water, and shelter cannot fulfill the needs of humans without social interaction. Mary Shelley explains this idea well in her novel Frankenstein. In the story, a scientist named Victor Frankenstein creates life but quickly abandons it due to its deformities. This creature would live life without the help of his creator cause the downfall of Victor. Shelley shows that Victor’s abandonment of the creature contributes to many feelings the creature goes through. Shelley writes that: “I was benevolent; my soul glowed with love and humanity; but am I not alone, miserably alone? You, my creator, abhor me; what hope can I gather from your fellow creatures, who owe me nothing? They spurn and hate me.” (Shelley 103). The creature expresses his sadness to Victor as he abandons the creature, and the creature cannot make contact with other humans because of his deformities. He also conveys his anger toward Victor from the human's treatment of him. Shelley describes that: “I am the miserable and the abandoned, am an abortion, to be spurned at, and kicked, and trampled on. Even now my blood boils at the recollection of this injustice” (Shelley 224). Victor’s negligence heavily influences the creature’s emotions. He leaves the creature in a wretched state as he feels sadness and anger more often than a normal man. Schoenfelder et al. illustrate this idea by explaining that those who experience improper close relationships early on in life will experience issues with mental health and romantic relationships (Schoenfelder et al.).
