Frankenstein Controversial Theme

In the novel “Frankenstein”, Mary Shelley displays a variety of themes throughout the novel. The author utilizes various themes that were controversial during the time of the release of Frankenstein. The reader can find themes like the quest for knowledge or even a prejudice theme. The quest for knowledge was one of the most controversial themes because of the use of science being utilized for evil frightened people at the time. Although, these themes were very controversial, the predominant theme Mary Shelley exhibits in the novel is family, society, and isolation. Mary Shelley successfully displays the theme of family, society, and isolation through the characters and their actions.

It is clear that the creature is hideously ugly, and it is disturbing for man to look at. To elucidate, in chapter 11 when the creature attempts to communicate with Frankenstein , Frankenstein Tells it,”Do you dare approach me? and do not you fear the fear vengeance of my arm wreaked on your miserable head? Begone, Vile insect!”(Ch. 10, Pg 41). In brief, the creature did not only receive rejection from society, but from his own creator Frankenstein. With this in mind, the creature then goes on to tell Frankenstein of his story. After he explains his first feelings of life, the creature tells Frankenstein of his first interactions with society. To enumerate, the creature says,”I perceived a small hut…...This was a new sight to me ….. I found the door open, I entered. An old man sat in it, near a fire, over which he was preparing his breakfast. He turned one hearing a noise, and perceiving me, shrieked loudly, and quitting the hut, ran across the fields with speed”(Ch.11, Pg. 44). In detail, the creatures first interaction with a human, was the man shrieking of horror and running away.Although the creature seemed not to make a big deal of this occurrence, he goes on to say that in his next interaction with man,”The whole village was roused; some fled, some attacked me,until, grievously bruised by stones and many other kinds of missile weapons, I escaped”(Ch. 11, Pg 44). Thus, at this point the creature realized that there would be no acceptance for it at this point. The creature then begins to observe itself and realizes the difference between itself and the rest of the people scared of him. The creature then goes into isolation at this point, keeping away from society and strictly surviving on its own in nature, since he had to avoid running into people. Lastly, after the creature expresses his previous situations to Frankenstein, he ask for Frankenstein to produce
