Frankenstein, Or The Modern Prometheus is a gothic fiction novel authorized by Mary Shelley. The novel talks about a young man, named Victor, wanting to create a master race and succeeding, but flees and abandon this newly created creature. The creature, in return, all alone in isolation, seeks revenge on Victor by destroying everything his creator cherishes. The novel specifically talks about the quest for knowledge and how far some may go, even in dangerous situations. The author uses characterization of Victor and the conflicts that he encounters to convey that the pursuit of knowledge is a dangerous quest, as shown from his conflict with society, curiousity, and by his ambition. In Chapter 2, Victor tells the readers his interests going into books. His favorite volume of works come from Cornelius Agrippa. His father sees this and tells his son not too waste his time. Victor doesn’t listen to his father and wants to dive more into what these man had to say. He says, “Under the guidance of my new preceptors I entered with the greatest diligence into the search of the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of life” (Shelley, 29). Victor’s pursuit of knowledge comes from his curiosity of the world, as his idea of creating the master race needed the secret of ever-lasting life. Following chapter 2, Victor analyzes Elizabeth, as she enjoyed the appearance of things, while he was delighted in investigating how they came to be. He says, “The world was to me a secret which I had desired to divine” (25). This characterizes Victor; how his curiosity of things were one of the earliest things he could remember, and how he’s determined to invest into how everything works.
