An expectation for an average child to develop is under the condition that the child is shown affection and love. These are key factors in an early childhood because it affects an individual’s mental well-being. The state a child is raised, will further affect their adult life. In the article The “Anatomy of Violence” by Sharon Begley and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, prove a person’s psychological state is the outstanding factor which leads to potential violent actions and the state of nurture a person undergoes in their early years will further influence them mentally in the future.

In under a year, the creature found comfort in the home of the cottagers, where he learned a great deal of knowledge, and the ability to love. However, when he decides to reveal himself to the blind man, he gets caught and “ Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me [the creature] from his father.” The monster’s first family was disgusted of him and caused his “ heart sank [sink] within me [him] as with bitter sickness." Imagine your family who you had loved and they nurtured you in the best way, simply resent you for your appearance. The monster was seen as a monster and nothing more. For this, he felt hurt and betrayed because all he felt for them was love and care. As a consequence of the rejection, Frankenstein’s violent actions in the future were fundamentally caused by this event. Furthermore, such causes of brutal affairs usually “raise the question of where misery and the ensuring hatred, resentment, and anger come from. An obvious place to look is early childhood.” A child is expected to be raised with great care and affection, this is so the individual will have a stable mindset emotionally and mentally. However, if a child is brought up around hatred and rejection, this may lead to mental instability, especially emotionally. Both articles contain evidence in which an individual’s state of mind is affected by how nurturing their childhood environment was. However, nature may contain a part of an individual's mentality because of their surroundings in which they were raised in. For example, in Frankenstein, the creature grew up in woods and was surrounded by animals who were driven by their carnal desires. He was able to live off of berries and leaves, similarly to a wild animal. Such living conditions could also have an affect on the violent actions in which the creature partook in. Although, this may be a possibility, nurture is the most outstanding characteristic represented in the book. Mary Shelley represented this throughout the entire book. For instance, even though Frankenstein was on the opposing end of hatred and violence, he still saw love and affection as in on looker of the daily life of the cottagers. The creature saw how Felix and his wife interacted and was able to identify it as love. Love, which was a feeling he so desperately wanted to experience, due to the fact that he never remotely felt such an affair. He showed his sensitive side by saving a girl from drowning, yet soon after was shot at for that same action. His looks frightened people and he resented society for it.
