Ignorance is sparked by the absence of knowledge and the fear of change. Facts dismissed out of ignorance still remain true and will continue to affect one out of lacking awareness. If left untreated, ignorance can gain the potential to become the catalyst of self-annihilation. The ignorance displayed by characters in The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley has led to personal struggles that can be remedied through an open mind. Hosseini reveals that Amir’s ignorance is sparked by youthhood, as he doesn’t acknowledge the seriousness of the situations he is put in. Once Victor is acquainted with modern science and contributes it to his current studies, he discovers that creating life through electricity is possible on a large scale. His immediate idea is to ”attempt the creation of a being like myself” without having any previous experimentation or analysis to base his assessment upon (Shelley 53). Although he pondered the thought of creating a simpler project, his ignorance led him away as he “pursued nature to her hiding-places” (Shelley 53). Not understanding what he had created, Victor cast the creature away, ignoring the creature’s need for proper nurturing and affection. His drive for harnessing life also made him grow ignorant of his personal needs. The two-year process of Victor’s project left him malnourished and sleep deprived, sending him into a state of illness. Isolated from his friends and family during his experimentation, his mental state faced consequences as well, experiencing nightmares. Upon approaching Victor, desperate for a female, the creature is shut down by Victor. Shelley elaborates on his fear for the future of mankind by provoking ignorance in Victor’s response. The creature explains to Victor that even though he abandoned his duties to nurture him, Victor still holds a moral responsibility to provide the creature with essential needs including happiness. Victor contemplates whether his loyalty swings more towards the safety of mankind or the happiness of his creation, as for him to “create another like yourself, whose joints wickedness might desolate the world”, imposes a huge fear for complying to the creature’s ask (Shelley 156). The creature promises that no harm will come to humanity as they will isolate themselves, but Victor is still hesitant for he does not know what the readers know. Victor blinded by ignorance can not see that the creature had learned emotional awareness and desires a mate the same way a human desires
