Frankenstein's Monster Society makes us who we are. It is very important to talk about this because the book Frankenstein; or the Modern Prometheus presents this a lot. This book was written by Mary Shelly. It is about a man, Victor Frankenstein, who decided to create life but he realized that it was ugly and terrifying and abandoned it. The creature's life is filled with pain and he comes after Victor by killing everyone who is dear to him. Mary Shelly uses the characterisation of the creature and the conflicts that he encounters to convey that society makes us who we are as shown by hatred, rejection, and violence. The monster has a conflict with himself. He feels hatred toward himself as he sees humans as wonderful and perfect. He says, “I admired the perfect forms of my cottagers–their grace, beauty, and delicate complexions”(pg. 112). The monster feels the opposite about himself. He says, “when I became fully convinced that I was in reality the monster that I am, I was filled with the bitterest sensations of despondence and mortification”(pg. 112). This relates to the theme because it shows that the monster feels inferior compared to the humans because he looks ugly in their eyes and now in his. He feels rejected by the humans. He tries to get love from the villagers and is returned with fear and anger. He says that, “Felix darted forward and with supernatural force tore me from his father whose knees I clung”(pg. 136). This shows that instead of caring for the one that had helped them before they were scared and tried to get rid of him. The creature states, “despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were that of rage and revenge”(pg. 137). As a result of the family he considered his own rejecting him, he felt rage and sought revenge on them. This shows that rejection from humans made him want to hurt
