As soon as Victor’s father notices his son’s peaked interest in the physician’s work, he attempts to discourage his son from learning the nonsense. Victor, instead, claims that “the cursory glance [his] father had taken” from the book “by no means assured [Victor] that [his father] was acquainted with its contents” and continues “to read with the greatest avidity” (Shelley 22). By ignoring his father, Victor further establishes his newfound passion for natural philosophy and continues to indulge in Agrippa’s works. Victor then undertakes the knowledge of other authors of the subject, such as Paracelsus and Albertus Magnus, which in turn make him realize his ambition to make a discovery of the world rather than becoming wealthy. When Victor turns seventeen, he continues his education at the University of Ingolstadt, where his passion for natural philosophy grows.

The monster also compares his relationship to Victor to that of God and Adam, wishing that he had the same supplication to his creator that Adam did, “I remembered Adam’s supplication to his creator.

The power of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. However, it is not always the content or amount of knowledge that is dangerous. It is the person behind that knowledge that has the potential to bring danger to society. No tale represents this better than Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein. Monsters and myths can be scary or frightening to young children.

Their ambition drives them to take risks and even put the lives of themselves and others on the line.
The idea of knowledge in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley interprets knowledge as an evil pursuit. The knowlege is misused, due to Victor, the monster, and the interference with nature. He reads books, studies literature, explores sciences, and finds love. Frankenstein’s ability to explore new ideas and create are his biggest sources of freedom. At a young age, Victor discovers the teachings of Cornelius
(30). Victor becomes enamored with science and ideas that come with the subject. Victor wants to unlock all of the knowledge that science brings for the sake of his own enrichment. This leads Victor to become obsessed with the idea of creating life and soon finds a way to do so. “ It was with these feelings that I began the creation of a human being.”(33).
As a society we all seek answers to how God did it or question how we all got here, in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein the key theme is the thirst for knowledge. Throughout the novel there are three prominent characters that seek for the understanding of life, including Victor Frankenstein, the creature, and Walton. The most important character involved with this particular theme is Victor Frankenstein, it all starts with his curiosity. Victor’s curiosity sparks with the statement that “The world was to me a secret which I desired to divine” (2.1).
In this, Victor brought up things that no mortal should know about, such as: cloning, stem cell research, and IVFs. Examples of these were shown when the author states, “It was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn… my inquiries were directed to the metaphysical… the physical secrets of the world” (43). Victor is knowingly tampering with knowledge that is essentially too great for man. He is also essentially trying to be like God, which is the original sin, and as a result, he is put in eternal despair.
After acquiring all the new knowledge, he should know that this is a bad idea but continues anyway. This suggests that knowledge is not rightly learned through books but needs to be learned through experience. This leads to his hatred of humans and the killing of many of Victor’s friends and family. The monster is flooded with information after reading these books.
