Throughout literature, nature is used as a symbol that can emphasize many different things. It can be used to show emotion, to build suspense and create a nervous feeling, or to show peace and chaos like how it is used in Frankenstein. In Frankenstein, Shelley uses the word nature in opposing settings to show the importance of its laws. The word nature is used in this novel to show peace throughout the story. One example of this idea where Victor Frankenstein has just been dragged onto Robert Walton’s ship. “Even broken in spirit as he is, no one can feel more deeply than he does the beauties of nature” (Page 30). This shows that nature is making Frankenstein be at peace with himself. Another example of this is in this passage. “ In M. Waldman I found a true friend. His gentleness was never tinged by dogmatism, and his instructions were given with an air of frankness and good nature that banished every idea of pedantry.”(Page 51). In this quote, Frankenstein is talking about his teacher, M. Waldman, and saying great things about him. He is saying that M. Waldman’s good nature and kindness made him a true friend of Victor’s, his kind and peaceful self attracted people towards him because they sensed that he was a good person due to his good nature. Lastly, there is another example connecting peace and nature when Victor says. “I was fond of exercise, and Clerval had always been my favorite companion in the ramble of this nature”(Page 75).
