Four were left dead. Who is responsible? Mary Shelley’s novel, “Frankenstein,” tells the story of a gifted scientist who can give life to a creation of his own. The creation ends up being a hideous creature that gets rejected by its creator, Victor Frankenstein, and society. This rejection makes it angry and leads it to murder the people Victor loves. Many argue that since the creature is doing the killing, it is to blame for their deaths, but Frankenstein should be the one to be blamed. Victor Frankenstein is the one who played God, neglected his creation, and refused to make it happy. At the beginning of the book, the reader quickly learns that Victor Frankenstein is obsessed with science. In chapter five, he goes against the laws of science and gives life to a creation of his own. This decision is the first reason Victor should be held responsible for the murders of his family and friends. On page 35, the text says, “I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.” (Shelley) If Victor had not given the creature life, then it would not have been able to murder anyone. Victor says, “He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped, and rushed downstairs”(Shelley 35-36) When Victor left, the monster did too.
