The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939 and impacted millions of families and individuals in the United States due to the economic decline that prevented people from being able to work, eat, or support themselves. Roosevelt inspired hope in the whole nation by providing relief measures. In a time of hunger, despair, and poverty, relief measures are crucial. By implementing the New Deal programs, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped relieve people by providing them with steady employment, financial assistance, and economic security. For example, in his speech, FDR says, “I see a United States which can demonstrate that, under democratic methods of government, national wealth can be translated into a spreading volume of human comforts hitherto unknown, and the lowest standard of living can be raised far above the level of mere subsistence.” He uses inspirational words to inform the United States citizens of the new reliefs they will be granted due to his New Deal programs.
