How did Franklin D. Roosevelt campaign for president? When the Great Depression took a toll and materialized into its highest peak of annihilation, Franklin D. Roosevelt had set a quest to obtain that presidency. The economy had declined, the stock market crashed, banks were failing, millions of American workers out of jobs, and worst yet, this recession almost ended America for good. Despite all these major problems, theoretically resulting in the downfall of America, would Franklin D. Roosevelt be eligible for president, considering the qualities needed in terms of leadership, intellect, skills, etc? Roosevelt defeated Republican, Herbert Hoover, and became the 32nd president in the presidential election. It was a monumental win for Franklin and became a living monarch. Franklin outstandingly demolished the election, winning forty-two out of the forty-eight states, a total of 472 to 59 electoral votes. Franklin won the popular vote by 22.8 million, as compared to Herbert with a total of 15.7 million. The Democrats had firm control over the House and the Senate. In March 1933, Franklin began his first term as president, underlying one of the worst crises in America, the Great Depression. Franklin had to act fast and completely diminish the everlasting crisis. On Franklin’s first inaugural address, Franklin said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” which lifted the spirits of anxious Americans. Franklin called an emergency conference with the Democratic congress and addressed the problems and his plans that would solve them. After one hundred days of being in office, the Democratic congress passed all his plans for America. Franklin attacked the Depression cautiously, but in a deliberate manner. In the end, Americans experienced the slow recovery from the Great Depression, but unemployment rates still remained.
