Franklin's Role In The Rime

A Franklin was a Medieval landowner and in the tale he is considered to be of noble status. A characteristic that comes with this title is being a gracious host to all guests. In the prologue he is described as being just that and much more by always keeping a fully stocked pantry so he could prepare a meal at moments notice. The Franklin's actually role in society was being what is called a Knight of the Shire. He would keep track of individuals income which is formally known as being a tax auditor. Due to the warmth and generosity he gives off, the Franklin is one of the best at what he does and that is why he is respected and considered to be of a noble status.
