In life things seem to occur whenever putting people way off track. No matter the age adversity is always there to strike and usually strikes when someone is most comfortable. As people age and acknowledge things better it only gets worse. Though it does get tougher it’s those moment that strength the human civilization. It is what help society advance and get stronger. Every person leads a different life and has problems of their own that they must face. Society drills the idea into people 's minds saying that people must be independent. In Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” and Colum McCann “Sh’khol” there were multiple obstacles the main character has to deal with from not being loved, to being alone and losing a loved one. The authors use several literary elements, so readers can better understand what the author is trying to get across. Before Tomas disappears his mother Rebecca and him are celebrating a catholic Christmas. By the title of the story “ Sh’khol” McCann foreshadows that Rebecca will lose Tomas and Christmas day will be the last moment they spend together (McCann 176). “Tomas was gone,” this is internal dialogue, the tone is fearful and worried at this point a motherly senses kicks in. Rebecca’s motherly instinct kicks in because someone she cares very much is out of her life leaving no trace to where he went. Rebecca is supposed to helping Tomas live a great life, but she still drinks around him. Irony is seen when Rebecca slowly inserts alcohol back into Tomas’s environment (McCann 183). With the “empty green bottle,” the color green signifies life, renewal and nature, since, the bottle is empty that implies she has no life (183) Tomas is looked at like he is Jesus and his blood is supposed to be the wine, and
