Being named the highest academic achiever of anyone in your school is quite the achievement; however, in “Best in Class” by Margaret Talbot, she puts forth the message that the fight for valedictorian is causing much more harm than good. Talbot reinforces this argument through her uses of hard evidence to appeal to ethos and her anecdotal interviews to appeal to pathos. Being one of the strongest parts of her article, Talbot’s use of great amounts of hard evidence strengthens her appeal to ethos. Being a reporter, and a female reporter at that, Talbot must be very careful to avoid using overly-emotional appeals to try and convey her argument. A weakness of selecting certain sorority members based on the author’s discretion holds bias because of its convenient sampling. Robbins’ selection of particular participants may not fully represent the population, even though Robbins indicated that one of the sorority members would be a positive representative of the national organization. In addition, the participants are only from one institution and a small sample size. Robbins’s lack of details of her methodology of how she obtained their experiences and not using real names or locations to conceal her sources' identities lacks credibility. In the article, “College Pressures,” William Zinsser discusses the many struggles college students face while trying to focus on their studying. He convinces the reader of his point by using different types of rhetorical strategies. Zinsser’s usage of the rhetorical strategies such as getting straight to the point, quoting, paragraphing, the use of word pictures, and choosing a title was effectively done in his article to persuade his reader of the struggles faced by college students. The author did not waste anytime getting to the main point in his article, which is effective because it makes me interested in what he had to say.
Trigger Warnings on College Campuses Rhetorical Analysis Writers Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, in their article “The Coddling of the American Mind”, detail the effects that safe spaces and trigger warnings are having on college campuses. All around the country there are hundreds of Greek organizations spread among college campuses. For some college students it may be the ultimate college dream to join a fraternity or sorority. In movies like “Neighbors” and “House Bunny” fraternity and sorority life in college is typically portrayed as the stereotype of being one big party all the time. Through social media outsiders may see joining a fraternity or sorority as a way of “buying” your friendships. Some may even have a fear of Greek life from hearing of hazing incidents and deaths.
