Sir Max the Mighty
C.S. Lewis once said, “Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.” Rodman Philbrick wrote his book Freak the Mighty about how the two most unlikely of friends can change each other for the better. Freak the Mighty is all about the adventures of two boys named Max and Kevin. Max is a large, misunderstood, learning-impaired boy with a very complicated family life. Kevin, also known as Freak, is a crippled prodigy and overall genius. For example in the text Max states, “Of course Freak has probably already guessed I’m a learning disabled, because he’s had a look around my room and it isn’t exactly the public library” (Philbrick 21). This quote shows Max’s humility by demonstrating his modest view of his intellect. Max knows that he is learning disabled and this causes him to have very low self esteem. He assumes that Freak already knows he is simpleminded just by the contents of his room. Throughout Freak the Mighty Max is extremely self-deprecating, saying he cannot read, write, or use his brain in general; instead he says Freak is the smarts in their friendship. Similarly to his underestimated view of his intelligence, Max also has a diminished view of his strength and determination. He even goes as far as to call himself a goon. His father, Killer Kane, was choking Lorreta Lee because she was saving Max. Max believed that even a fool like him knew Killer Kane was unstoppable, but he persisted in his rescue attempts anyway. He ended up saving Lorreta by distracting Kane so she could recover. Both are clear examples of Max’s
