Fred Rogers, who was a very warmhearted and caring person, once said, “As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is…” He always wanted people to realize how special they really were; that they were here for a reason. He accomplished that in his life, along with many other great achievements.
Fred McFeely Rogers was born on March 20, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He grew up there, and as a child loved playing the piano and with his puppets. In 1946, he graduated and studied at Dartmouth College, then transferred to Rollins College in Florida, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition. He also met Sara Joanne Byrd at Rollins, whom he married in 1952. During his senior year in college, his parents bought a television set, and he was amazed by it, so he decided he wanted his career to be in television. He worked this job for several years, and decided to earn a Master of Divinity degree at Pittsburgh Presbytery. Rogers was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1962, and jumped right back into the television business. He accepted an offer from CBC of a show called Misterogers in 1962, so he and his wife moved to Canada. After a few years, he eventually earned the rights to the show, and changed the name to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. They moved back to Pittsburgh, where they raised their kids. In 1971, Rogers founded The Fred Rogers Company, which was his own children’s television production organization. PBS began broadcasting Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood around this time, and was aired for the next thirty years, from 1971 -
