Today we will be paying our respects to Alfred Traum or Freddie who was born on March the 22nd 1929. Freddie was a holocaust survivor and was born in Vienna, Austria. When he was 9 he was forced to leave his public school and he attended a Jewish school. It wasn’t really a Jewish school; it was more of a school to keep Jews away from other schools. His non- Jewish friends joined Nazi groups and started to abuse Freddie and all other Jews at the school. On June 20 1939, when Freddie was 10 years old, his life changed forever. He said goodbye to his family and went on the Kindertransports to England with his older sister, Ruth. The Schooling was much better there and he stayed with a family called Mr. And Mrs. Grigg. Once the War started they were moved to America, and weren’t seen as a Jew anymore, but a London Evacuee. He still felt that everyone would judge him at school. Freddie had a tough life, a real tough life. After going to America he decided to work on a farm. But that didn’t go down well. They would only let Freddie and Ruth in at meal times and too sleep. Freddie was filled with anger and hatred for the family and he didn’t understand why the family was any different to him.”What exactly was the difference? He wondered to himself. In England, he witnessed many Germany attacks including the “doodlebug”. As news about the Holocaust started arising, he and his sister found out terrible news, his parents died in the Holocaust. It came as a big shock to Freddie and it would have been very tough times. Freddie and Ruth moved to Manchester to make a fresh start. Freddie had an attitude of that everything will be alright and life goes on. This was one of the good qualities about Alfred. Another good quality about Freddie was that always sticked by his sisters’ side no matter
