In this chapter, Frederick Douglass first talks about where he was born in Tuckahoe near Hillsborough. Which is twelve miles from Easton in Talbot county, Maryland. Frederick Douglass doesn’t know how old he is. He thinks he is around the age of twenty-seven to twenty-eight. His mother name is Harriet Bailey. He doesn’t know the name of his father. Whispers became to words that his father was his master. Frederick was separated from his mother as an infant. But at that time he didn’t know that Harriet was his mother. At night his mother would walk twelve miles to where frederick had been held as a slave to put him asleep at night. “The twelve miles that she walked was after a full day's worth of working on her bare feet”. His mother died when he was about seven years old near one of his masters farm from an illness. In this chapter, Frederick Douglass talks about the overseers of the slave farms, Wye Town, and New Design. He also talks about Mr. Severe which he described him as a “Cruel man”. Hopkins who was the new overseer in office didn’t have a long career there. Mr. Hopkins career was short due to the lack of doing the job correctly. Mr. Hopkins wasn’t like all the other overseers, he was actually nice to the slaves. When Mr. Hopkins was the overseer the slaves had a feeling they thought they would never feel. They had felt happier and safer when he was around. But know that he is gone the slaves knew they wouldn’t have that feeling ever again. Mr. Hopkins was succeeded by Mr. Austin Gore who had characteristics that made him to be a first-rate overseer. Mr. Austin Gore was known as a grave man with no jokes and words that are never funny.
