The Narrative written by Fredrick Douglass was an important book and was a big part of contributing to what we know about the history of slavery. The narrative involved the troubles slaves and Fredrick would go through and how they felt in those horrible moments of their lives. For Fredrick to be free he needed to disguise himself as a sailor and he boarded a northbound train. Sometimes we don’t realize how good freedom really is until we lose it. The book talks about the struggle for freedom, and the horrors of slavery both country and city slaves.

The task system was like chores slaves had to do and once they finished they could do whatever they like but the opposite of the task system is a gang system which was worse because the slaves had to work from sunrise to sunset. In my opinion, the gang system leads to more pain. An example of how bad it was is as Fredrick Douglass said “Mr.Covey succeeded in breaking me. I was broken in body, soul, and spirit.’ Also “He then gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up.” Meaning the punishment was horrible and cruel enough to kill someone and slave owners would often kill their slaves. There were many abolitionists fighting for slavery for example Harriet Tubman and William Lloyd Garrison. Harriet Tubman used many ways to escape the slave plantation. The most common way she used to escape was to go underground in tunnels and both white and black people helped her. This quote explains how she escaped. “On some darkly propitious night, there would be breathed about the Negro quarters of a plantation word that she had come to lead them forth. At midnight, she would stand waiting in the depths of woodland or timbered swamp, and stealthily, one by one, her fugitives would creep to the rendezvous. She entrusted her plans to buy a few of the party... She knew her path well by this time, and they followed her unerring guidance without question. She assumed the authority and enforced the discipline of a military despot." (Contemporary Black Biography) Harriet was and is the biggest abolitionist that fought for the freedom of slaves Even though Fredrick, and Harriet had different forms of escape and freedom they all freed most slaves. William Lloyd Garrison was very special being a White abolitionist fighting for the freedom of black slaves/people.
