In Frederick Douglass’s essay “Learning to Read and Write” he explains many of the deterrents he faced as a slave, including the challenges of reading and writing in this era. Owners prohibited their slaves to have an education. Why would they not want their slaves to have an education? Being educated meant you had the power of knowledge. Slaves lacked the basic concept of understanding and power, therefore they couldn’t challenge the practice of slavery in a political manner.
In the Frederick Douglass reading “Learning how to Read and Write” he describes how he learned how to read and write as an African American slave in his time. Frederick was a sneaky kid he had various method learning how to read and write. It must have been very hard to learn how to be literate, and be a slave at the same time. Frederick’s mistress was kind enough to instruct him. I think the mistress did not have the same mind set as her husband, she went out of her way behind her husband’s back to teach Douglass how to read.
Many of us take education for granted and don’t learn to our fullest potential, but Fredrick Douglass soaked in every piece of information up because he knew it was his way out. “Learning to Read and Write” is a famous article based on what Fredrick Douglass went through to earn a valuable education while being enslaved. Author Fredrick Douglass, wrote “Learning to Read and Write”, published in 1845. Throughout the article, he takes us through different events he goes through while being enslaved. Douglass begins building his credibility with personal facts and successfully demonstrating logic and pathos appeal.
In “Learning to Read and Write” by Fredrick Douglass, Douglass went through many obstacles to learn to read and write. He was living with the Hugh family for quite some time about seven years. Douglass’s first learned the alphabet from his mistress. Douglass goes on about how his mistress is so kind and nice to him even though she eventually converted to her husband practices and dehumanized him. According to Douglass, he says, “She at first lacked the depravity indispensable to shutting me up in mental darkness.
In his book “The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass,” he talks about how he managed to learn to read. He would trade bread with some of the white boys in his neighborhood and in return they would teach him to read. He also taught himself by challenging some of the local kids to letter writing contests. This shows that taking risks to read and write was important because reading and writing is important to being a free person. In “Learning to Read,” the speaker and some of her fellow freed slaves are living in the south where they are not allowed to read.

Throughout the authors writing he taught me that it was okay to struggle and fail even in the toughest moments in life, but it shouldn’t discourage you from achieving in life. Douglas has educated me that taking time and effort is one of the main keys that helps reach out a goal and feel like you have done a better impact in your own life. Also, helped me understand that reaching out for help could have a better impact than doing things independently.

Frederick’s main challenge was that of not being an owner of his person but rather a slave and a property to someone else. Frederick Douglass lived in the time when slavery was still taking place and slaveholders viewed slavery and education as incompatible. The slave system didn’t allow mental or physical freedom for slaves; slaveholders were to keep the apt appearance and slaves were to remain ignorant.
According to Mistress Hugh, “education and slavery were incompatible with each other” (Douglass, 33). Although Mistress Hugh had stopped teaching Douglass how to read, the seed of knowledge had already been planted. In the years that followed, his hunger for knowledge did not dissipate. He wanted to battle racism against black people, so he decided to study. He thought his knowledge would make him escape from that horrible place. He “consoled [himself] with the hope that [he] should one day find a good chance [to escape]. Meanwhile, [he] would learn to write" (Douglass).
However, literacy turns out to be not only bliss, but also painful. Douglass finally succeeded in learning how to write when he was left alone by his mistress and started to practice writing in his Master Thomas’s copy-book.
