The person I am doing my report on in Frederick Douglass. Frederick was a well known American author, abolitionist, and orator. He gave many human rights lectures in Protestant churches, and became a very popular figure. He campaigned for the federal government to allow blacks to serve as soldiers. Douglass was very successful at what he contributed to the Civil War. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery on a Maryland plantation. He never knew exactly when he was born. “I have no accurate knowledge of my age,” he wrote, “never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters . . . to keep their slaves thus ignorant.” …show more content…

His speech and story impressed a abolitionist leader. Later on he was hired as an anti-slavery lecturing agent. Douglass later moved his family to Lynn, Massachusetts. There he spent the next few years giving anti-slavery speeches. Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist and civil rights activist. Even when Frederick was young he fought against slavery. In addition to being an abolitionist, Frederick also became active in the Underground Railroad, and helped slaves get to Canada. In addition to helping slaves get to Canada, Frederick had to fled there too. Frederick sailed back in 1859, which was followed by the tragic death of his youngest daughter. During the Civil War Frederick asked Lincoln to make the abolition of slavery a goal. He also asked that he fight for the right of African Americans to enlist in the military. Douglass believed that the free blacks in the north had the responsibility to fight for the Union. Lincoln debated about letting blacks into the army, but after the release Emancipation Proclamation on January, 1863, they were allowed to fight. Douglass traveled thousands of miles attending meeting, and recruiting blacks for the military. As the war continued black troops took on more responsibility, and began to grow.
