Nineteenth century Americans are criticize by the things that were taking upon throughout the years with slavery and race in America. Although what others think are going to remain the same. Reading Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass you will receive outstanding knowledge on the history. I have gain a lot of knowledge about slavery and how things were back when Frederick Douglass was growing up. He express how things were handle and also how slave owners were treating slaves. However, you gain a lot of knowledge and it makes you wonder how anyone at the time couldn’t see the pain and cruelty that was going on in front of their eyes. To receive education on the history of the United States slavery reading Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass is a great book to receive it from. The history that is stated in the book is in critical to understand. The book doesn’t just need for African Americans to read but for all races to acknowledge the sacrifices that were made. He still continue to go through with his journey. Scenes that appeared in his life presented to the aspect of slavery. As of the protagonist, he occurs as a strong character. Douglass is telling about his life of growing up. He has had a journey in his life from being a young slave in Maryland to famous author in the North. He mention “I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing difficulty—to wit, the white man’s power to enslave the black man. It was a grand achievement, and I prized it highly. From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom.” (6.3). The author, Frederick Douglass express his life through the book. He told how he was treated, how things were control and more. Although he was a very smart man to be a slave. You would think since his father was a white man that he would have a better experience of being a slave. But if your mother was a black woman you would be considered a slave.
