In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, this story emphasizes the importance of education. He learns this from a young age that reading and writing are his resolutions of becoming free. This starts the journey of the autodidact, which ultimately will give him the way of becoming a free man.
This all begins when he meets his new masters, Mr. and Mrs. Auld. Mrs. Auld, who was not familiar with having a slave, teaches Douglass how to read and later is found out by Mr. Auld. Although the learning didn’t proceed, he realizes the importance of reading when he overhears Mr. Auld informs Mrs. Auld about the consequences of teaching a slave how to read and even illegal to do so. However, this marks the beginning of self-learning.
