January 11, 2023 Data from the 2021 Canada census shows about eight percent of our population is facing the many challenges of poverty (Government of Canada). To put that into perspective, Canada has a population of 39 million people (Government of Canada). Using this data, approximately 3 159 000 people are facing poverty in Canada today. In this report, topics revolving around poverty such as causes, problems, effects, and awareness groups will be debunked. It is defined as only surviving on about one dollar and ninety cents per day (Myers). The Government of New Brunswick states, “We all pay the price for poverty. The increased cost on the health system, the justice system, and other systems that provide support to those living in poverty has an impact on our economy.” This shows this is not just a problem for those facing it. In addition, there are countless causes of poverty. An article written by Kristin Myers lists many causes of poverty including poor access to living essentials, little access to education and jobs, inequality, climate change, and poor infrastructure, along with others. One of the most common causes is the lack of good jobs. Many low-wage workers' pay and hours do not equal the cost of living. Additionally, many low-paying jobs do not offer benefits to workers. This means they do not get coverage for high costs such as dental bills or eyeglasses (Myers). Also, the lack of infrastructure is a major problem. Citizens living in rural areas can often be faced with a lack of proper roads, bridges, technology, and transportation (Myers). Traveling far distances to access basic services is costly, not efficient, and keeps families in poverty (Myers).
