Reading Orange is the New Black made me realize all the flaws in prison. Here’s just a few of the many that I heard in Orange is the New Black. I will discuss the flaws with the faculty (correctional officers, warden, and counselors) conditions in prison, relationships betweens inmates, and racial profiling, but first let me tell you a little about Piper Kerman’s story, Orange is the New Black. Let’s start with racial profiling, in the book they talk about how the correctional officers would search people more often and more aggressively based on race. They often targeted Mexican's and favored whites. Do not get me wrong I believe whites have it worse in prison. They are targeted for rape and sexual type searches. Correctional officers can also tear apart you bunk whenever they feel like it. They also smuggle drugs into the prison and they also have sex with some of the prisoners even rape them. They can also just take you down to the “SHOE” or even psych whenever they want or they can just make up a reason for you to be down there. In chapter 15, Piper says that one correctional officer went crazy and destroyed multiple bunks. Correctional officers sometimes also have inappropriate relationships with prisoners. Many correctional officers go to jail for these relationships and the prisoners get added time. Correctional officers also hate “gangs”. To them, a gang is a group of more than 4 people who look or dress the same. They always look at the Mexicans, like usual. Besides gangs in prison, there are alliances and rivals. The main way to find your group is usually by race. If one race pisses off or crosses another you best be watching your
