Fate is the outcome of events beyond a person's control. The destiny of Antigone in the tragedy, Antigone, by Sophocles was to die for burying her brother, Polynices. It was made clear by Creon that by defying his authority, a person had to die. Antigone was destined to a tragic death before she was even born. Her realization and compliance to her fate is an important part of the tragedy.

Before Antigone was even born, her family had been cursed. The curse of Oedipus was placed on Oedipus’ family after he unknowingly married his own mother and killed his own father. Antigone acknowledges she is cursed to her sister, Ismene when she says ‘’ Do you perceive how Heaven upon us two - Means to fulfil, before we come to die, out of all ills that grew from Oedipus’’ pg 1. The curse had been placed in Antigone’s family long before she had been born, meaning the misfortune placed upon her family line was out of her control and will.
