The Glass Castle When being put on this Earth, there is one of two options that can be made. To follow our fate and let life take us there, or chose the power of free-will. In Jeanette Walls’ memoir, The Glass Castle, the Walls family are faced with stimulating and challenging decisions that can greatly affect the rest of their lives ahead, depending on which path they chose. It’s all a matter of fate or free-will. Rex Walls was easily able to turn his life around for the better. He suffered with severe alcoholism that affected everyone around him. Rosemary felt very strongly about this. “Your father needs to see the mess he’s making of our lives.” (112) Nothing was on his way to stop him from becoming successful and a well-rounded father figure. However, his free-will gravitated towards alcohol and pushed his fate to the side. Passing up lands worth millions of dollars in Texas, passed down from her family was her first mistake. Going to college to be a teacher but not following through with that was her second. Her stubbornness took over when she felt that being a teacher indicated that she was not a talented artist. Rosemary had several opportunities to make her fate a good one, yet chose not to. By choosing not to, it didn’t lead her to anywhere but the bottom of a dumpster in NYC. With that, one would think maybe she wants to change her life around.
