During the American Revolution freedom and liberty were very important to the many groups of society. Those include slaves, Loyalists, and Patriots. Each of these groups have a different idea of what freedom and liberty means to them. These ideas drove them to do specific actions in the story that severely changed the plot line. Every group had reason for the war to be fought, and that was to have their own freedom and liberty. First off, the Patriots wanted to be free from the clutches of the king. This is illustrated in the book with this, “The crowd marched off to make bullets and celebrate liberty and independence” (Isabel 126). This shows what actions were done to try to break free from the king. The Patriots were proud of what they did, and knew that being free from the king, and England, would bring them liberty and happiness. Second, the Loyalists also want freedom and liberty, but in a very different way. They simply want life back the way it was. In the book it explains, “Our world will return to the former state of tranquility we enjoyed before all this nonsense” (Mayor 90). This shows that all the Loyalists want is to have the war be over , and enjoy the same life they did before the insainess of the war. Wanting to have tranquility again made the Loyalists come up with some crazy plans. One of those was this, “With Washington gone the revolution will collapse” (Mayor 90). The Loyalists plan was to kill General Washington, so that the rebels would be weakened, and life would return to normal. Lastly, the slaves also had an idea of what freedom and liberty meant to them. These ideas are illustrated in the book with this,
